Firehouses of the 2000's

Nice! I personally admire the older style houses, but I guess you've got to keep an open mind. Also, is it just me, or aren't the bay doors at 201/144's seem out of place, or distinct as compared to the rest of the modern bay doors.

I think E-259 is a mix  of old school design with new school tech. I am sure the FF's like the technology but it clashes with the design. But then again I don't serve there. Are there plans for TL-79, pixs show development next to quarters!

They looked more like they belong on an automotive dealership building than a firehouse, especially compared to the other houses.

I still think the new station for Marine 1 looks ridiculous!  I think they could have spent less money and come up with a much better design.  This house certainly will never become a classic.

Thanks kfd274 - nice thread.

Hard to compare different eras of firehouse construction.

          does not compare to

The new firehouses are utilitarian and industrial looking, at best.  It is hard to believe that E 201, E 277 and E 10 firehouses will be sources of artistic beauty in the years ahead.  But at least the neighborhoods will know that they are "FDNY" firehouses:

Some old firehouses were designed by top architects and have decorative designs and ornate trim.  Workmanship and craftsmanship were evident in construction.

Today's fire stations are obviously designed and built by the lowest bidders.  The architect who designed the ugly reconstruction of E 259/L 128 has developed a building appropriate to face Calvary Cemetery.  Just compare this redesign with the flawless overhaul L 8's firehouse had to reduce it's size (2 bays to one).

What is really important is that hopefully they will serve the firefighters who live and work in them.

The above 3 firehouses are referred to as "Walker Houses" as they were built during Mayor Jimmy Walker's term in the 1930's.
