Foam Tankers

Will these 4 new tankers be replacing the foam units in service or will they be used like the foam tender?

By the sound of it, it sounds like they will be additional tender units.  Designed to provide a large quantity of foam when needed.  With more and more flammable materials in transit it certainly makes sense.

Wouldn't be surprised to see one of these go to E157/L80 or to E158 here on Staten Island...with all the running to Howland Hook the past few years it seems kinda logical.

The current foam tender and other rigs are pretty old.  The foam carriers are old mack pumpers which have been converted.

So maybe this is just to start replacing them.

Ah, "logical" being the key word and knowing the upper echelon do you really think it's possible?

...too true. heh.

Didn't the fdny spec something like this out a few years back and not go threw with it / cancel it? I thought I rember reading about them specing some sort of engine with no pump and a 1000 gal foam tank ? Something. Similar to the satellites but no gun and no LDH. They never went threw with it or something I thought or decided to use old engines or something

That was the word, these bids could all come back high and they decide to reuse old rigs again
Anything possible.

Would not be surprised if they refurb old engines again, that's a lot of coin for a rig that does not take in too many runs, how ever if you got these new they would probably last twice as long as a refurb. I guess it all comes down to what kind of money they can come up with. Anyone know what it cost to refit an engine with a foam tank? When they did the macks did they just do the hose bed removal / tank swap or did they repower them, paint em, etc . ?? I no the work was done in house and they appeared to come out nice, I've never talked to anyone who operated with one so I don't know how they function but would be interested to hear if anyone knows.

A firefighter at engine 154 was talking like they were already prepping to get a foam tanker as he mentioned them 3 times.

Seagrave got the contract
1.5mil
if that 1.5 mil is for 4 units they must be pretty basic specifications with nothing fancy at all.  For less than $400,000 you don't get a whole lot when you consider the warranty and everything else.

The FDNY Foam program is going through a bit of a transformation. 3 of the 5 new tankers have been delivered and training is underway. It is still be TBD where the new rigs are going but it may be 2 on SI 154/152 and one other in each boro. There are plans in the works to drain the foam tender and fill all 5 new tankers and the tender with AFFF Gold which is the new FDNY Foam agent. They are also looking into retrofitting 2 engines with FM500 ?? agent in their booster tanks as well. The old Macks are shot and 5, 157 and 321 are already condemned/destroyed. Foam program is a slow work in progress.

167 was bought by a friend of mine at auction last week.  2 of the foam tenders were at the rock on Wednesday.  the third supposedly went in service somewhere, but wasnt marked with a company #.
