For decades boaters on Galveston Bay, unless they were a harbor pilot navigating on the Houston Ship Channel (busiest port in the US in tonnage) by channel markers or using GPS, used the old Houston Lighting & Power generation plant in Bacliff as a landmark. Since you could see it over most of the bay, it was hard to get lost.
