In the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023, the Garden City Park Fire Department along with mutual aid companies operated on the scene of a working fire. Firefighters put at least two hand lines and the master stream of Mineola Ladder 168 into operation for heavy fire throughout a two-story, split level style private dwelling. Firefighters’ efforts were hampered by downed power lines, heavy fire load, and at least one inoperable fire hydrant. Seven occupants were able to evacuate the home and were hospitalized; however, one occupant was unable to make it out of the home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Didn’t Garden City used to have some paid career firefighters?

Garden City had a blended (Paid + Volunteer) Fire Department from 1928 to 2018. Relations between the paid and volunteer firefighters were not always cordial, and the whole situation came to a head in 2018, when the village Board voted to eliminate the paid (!) department as a cost-cutting measure. Since then, the department has been 100% volunteer.

This incident was not, however in Garden City, but in Garden City Park, a community north of Garden City with its own FD.

NY Village Eliminates Paid Firefighter Jobs

Garden City's 11 paid firefighters were told not to report to work Thursday after the village board eliminated their jobs to save $2 million per year.
