Seems like we're out of step with the rest of the country. The proposed FY2027 budget for our Fire Department calls for a 5.7% INCREASE in fire suppression staffing, after a 3.5% increase this year, for a total of a 9.2% increase over two years. What's even better is that the City Manager increased the department's manning request.
Reasons for this are to bring the department into compliance with NFPA 1710 standards to maintain its Class 1 status and reduce overtime, especially mandatory overtime. One benefit will be to increase engine company manning from a minimum of 2 to a minimum of FOUR firefighters. Of course, another benefit is reduced wear and tear on equipment, but this would affect primarily the maintenance department since the apparatus is leased.
