This year is the 125th anniversary of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" written of course by John Philip Sousa. He was a member of the Marine Band, "The President's Own", from1867 to 1892.
In the old U.S.S.R., the Massed Bands of the Soviet Army knew how to play the march from memory, and audiences routinely stood up and clapped along. Go figure.

In the 1960's homeowners in Houston were enamored with the look of cedar shingles on the roof of a lot of nicer homes. That came to an abrupt end on July 4th, 1968. Aided by a hot, windy day, over fifty cedar roofed homes burned. The next business day City Council passed an ordinance making it illegal to possess fireworks in the city without a special permit. Houston FD dispatchers managed the incidents with a voice alarm system to half the stations and a lone radio frequency (154.37 Megacycles). One of those days where everyone got the knob.
