NOVEMBER 10, is the Birthday of the USMC....Thanks to all who have served & those still serving & those who have Passed To A Higher Level while serving or after ......"Everyday is a holiday & every meal is a banquet"........SEMPER FI !......I remember 11-10-65..... we were attending cross training at the US Army Special Warfare School Of The Americas in Panama....for 2 weeks of the school we were camped out in a rain soaked jungle forest eating C rations ...the night of the MC Birthday we were not even aware of the Blackout that had occurred at home the day before (the original one not the Big one).....suddenly we heard people approaching..... a group of our Special Forces instructors appeared & gave the Platoon a few boxes of raw steaks & large sheet cake ...they said Happy Birthday Marines & left...we cooked the steaks whole on sticks dangled over a fire & tore off pieces & ate them like cavemen....a nice gesture by our Green Beret Brothers.....some things you never forget .......... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps (some of the following post & or re posts may have previous dates but contain good info)

Im currently reading a book, 'Hornets Over Kuwait' by Jay A Stout. The author tells the story of USMC VMFA 451 on thier tour of duty in the first Gulf War of 1990. The author flew the FA 18C during the conflict.

So far a great book.

The Marines. From what I understand there is no such thing as a former Marine, they are still "Marines". Defenition of a Marine: If you are our ally they are your best friend, if you are our enemy they are your worst nightmare! I used "they" to show support for the men and women who call themselves: The few, the proud, the Marines! Happy Birthday!

From poster "89west" from another site..... QUOTE....
Some MC Birthday trivia from Fox News

While the first cake ceremony is unknown, the first on record took place at MB, Wash DC in 1937. MG Holecomb, CMDT presided at an open house for MC officers, which included the cutting of a huge cake in the shape of Tun Tavern, the birthplace of the Corps.

Not mentioned in the article but an intricate part of the ceremony is the cutting of the cake. There are several versions of this rite but basically you will find the oldest Marine present passes the first slice cut to the youngest Marine present to symbolize the passing of knowledge and wisdom.

Semper Fidelis 246 with many more to come!......UNQUOTE....well said !

Happy Birthday to the USMC. At the moment I'm reading Escaping The Trap by Roy E. Appleman. The story of X Corps fighting withdrawal in Nov/Dec 1950. In here is also much about the 1st Marine Division including Lt. Col Raymond Davis' heroic march in brutal winter conditions to save Fox Company trapped at Toktong Pass. He received the Medal Of Honor for this incredible display of bravery and loyalty to his troops. Its not publicized like other parts of the Chosin Reservoir campaign but is another example of the US Armed Forces sacrifice for our Country.
