Just a quick question:

If I'm right, the Rescue Battalion responds from "Soc-Island" and  the safety Battalion out of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

But from where do the other 2 (Hazmat and Marine) come from?

Thanks in advance :)

The Marine Battalion is located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and HazMat Battalions 1 & 2 at SOC, Roosevelt Island.

Thank you very much for your fast answer. :)

What I also didn't know was that there are 2 Hazmat-Battalions on duty.
It seems they want to be well prepared if something big happens.

But this arises the question: Is there a reason why New York hasn't implemented a Hazmat Co.2 yet?
Budget? No willing members? Or even simply not enough Hazmat-Incidents?

Hazmat Battalion 2's rig is labelled "CBRN".  That stands for "Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear".  I don't know if it is manned 24/7.  Here's a photo of it from Mike Martinelli's fdnytrucks.com:

As for your other questions . . . I have no idea.  Even a relatively small city like mine (250,000 people) runs 2 Hazmat companies (although we are the regional Hazmat) . . . and we only have 11 engine and 9 ladder companies.

Hi--I'm not 100% sure on this-can and please do correct if I am wrong--being that the squad companies have second haz mat pieces and can handle smaller haz mat incidents,FDNY may feel there is no need to form a second haz mat company...

That's correct.

All 7 squads, Rescue 5 and some HMTU-Engines have 2nd Pieces for low-scale Hazmat-Incidents.
Plus several CPC-Ladders, the Decon-Shower-Units and so on.

This indeed could be a reason.

But as far as I know none of the units named above has a manning trained to the level of Hazmat-Specialists like the members of Hazmat 1.

So the rescue-,decon- and leak-containment- aspects may be covered but in most cases you don't know exactly with which kind of Hazardous-Materials you're dealing and so there is a need for high-class-metering with specialized tools (e.g a gas chromatograph) which I think only a full-time Hazmat-Company can handle.

Hazmat 2 I believe is a reserve type unit for special events or higher heightened alert times

I believe both Haz Mat battalions are at the academy. As far as the reserve Haz Mat (Haz Mat 2), according to the Operational Reference Guide, it's at Engine 206.

Ok, thank you both for your answers.

Makes sense that bot HazMat Battalions are stationed at the same location so they can use the same infrastructure.

As for the Reserve-hazmat: I've found this Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtVjrUmfJ6E
and it indeed seems to be located at Engine 206.

But as you just said it's more like a temporary- or backup-unit and not staffed at all times. (Like Rescue 6)
This is clearly a good thing for longer/bigger events but I think the response times for the daily use would be way too long so you can't really say that New York has 2 Hazmat Companies on duty.  More like 1 and a half. ;D

During hurricane Sandy on 10-29-12 (which was after this video was made) all the rigs in 206's FH got flooded.

Oh hell, no! Does that mean they all had to be scrapped?
Or could at least the H1M-Rig get a repair?

Because I think this is the rig and it looks pretty decent.

That hazmat rig was twice already, that rig is the 2001, the replacement which is the 2006 Ferrara has already been replaced with the current piece a 2011 or 2012 Ferrara (can't remember what year) not sure what happened to the 01 though
