On the night of Thurs., Dec. 22nd, the Hempstead Fire Dept. along with mutual aid cos. operated on the scene of a working fire at 150 West Columbia St. – a seven story fireproof multiple dwelling. Firefighters used the building’s standpipe system and put one hand line into operation for a fire in a top floor apartment. The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to that unit. One civilian was treated for smoke inhalation and the cause of the fire is under investigation. All fire dept. units were under the command of Hempstead Chief of Dept. Sandas [80].
