Bridgeport: Truck 3 did move from Norman Street to the new station on Wood Avenue, and then was subsequently closed.  Strange to have a firehouse with two engines (3 and 4) and no ladder.
Correct, John. I believe Truck 3 was closed in '95. I believe they were still very busy when they were closed down, much like BFD Engine 2. It is surprising that the Truck Co. out of Wood Ave. was closed when the firehouse houses 2 Engines. Usually, in the case of New Haven and Hartford, whenever 2 Engines are moved into one firehouse, 1 Engine usually is disbanded. In this case, it was the Truck.

At one time in Bridgeport, there were several firehouses with multiple companies. Back in the early '70's, I believe, the following companies were running:

Engine 1, Engine 5, Truck 5, Squad 5, Car 1(Chief of Department), Car 2(1st Battalion) - Downtown
Engine 2 - Lower East Side
Engine 3, Engine 4, Truck 3 - West Side
Engine 6, Engine 8, Truck 6, Car 3(2nd Battalion) - East End
Engine 7, Engine 11, Truck 11 - Black Rock(Engine 11 was closed in '76)
Engine 9, Engine 16 - North End(There were plans for a Truck 16, but they never came about, not sure when Engine 9 was closed)
Engine 10, Truck 10 - Upper East Side
Engine 12, Truck 12(City Service) - Brooklawn
Engine 14 - North End
Engine 15 - North End

New Haven had a similar system from the '60's into the '70's(excluding the Emergency Units):

Engine 1, Engine 11, Truck 2 - Hill
Engine 2, Engine 4, Truck 1, Car 32(Deputy), Car 35(Central Battalion) - Downtown/Wooster Square
Engine 3, Engine 6, Truck 4 - Dixwell/Newhallville
Engine 5 - Annex
Engine 7, Engine 10, Truck 3, Car 33(East Battalion) - Fair Haven
Engine 8, Engine 14, Truck 6 - East Rock/Newhallville
Engine 9, Car 34(West Battalion) - Ellsworth
Engine 12 - Downtown(Not sure when Engine 12 closed)
Engine 15, Truck 5 - Westville
Engine 16 - Lighthouse Cove
Engine 17 - Fairhaven Heights

Thanks Mack! BFD Headquarters was originally located on Middle St. near Gold St. in Downtown Bridgeport, before they moved to Congress St. where they are now. I believe back in the '30's or '40's, maybe earlier, BFD Truck Companies were renumbered to coincide with the Engines they were stationed with, similar to the way the LAFD does it. Truck 1 became Truck 3, Truck 2 became Truck 5, Truck 3 became Truck 6, Truck 4 became Truck 11, Truck 5 became Truck 12 and then there was Truck 10 formed with Engine 10. Truck 3 was closed in '95 and Truck 12 in '91.

Here's a bunch of photos of former/historic firehouses in New Jersey, including Hoboken, Newark, Bayonne, North Hudson Regional, and Jersey City: http://www.btfirephotos.com/Firehouses/Former-Firehouse/20021586_vxgxFF#!i=1642082521&k=wFmJDNn

A little bit of additional info on the Hoboken and Newark Fire Departments.

The Hoboken Fire Department currently protects 50,000 people living in 1 square mile. The HFD currently runs 3 Engines, 2 Ladders, and 1 Rescue out of 4 Fire Stations located throughout the city. Companies do, on average, around 3,500 runs annually. At one time, the HFD ran with 6 Engines and 3 Ladders. Recently, HFD Engine 4 was disbanded due to budget cuts. The Hoboken Fire Department is an ISO Class 1 fire department and each firehouse in the HFD is on the National Register of Historic Places, including their Fire Museum and two former firehouses.

Fire Museum - 213 Bloomfield St.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_of_Exempt_Firemen_Building)

The Newark Fire Department is currently the largest fire department in New Jersey and protects the state's largest city, serving 277,000 people living in 24 square miles. The NFD currently runs 15 Engines, 8 Ladders, and 1 Rescue out of 16 Fire Stations in 3 Battalions, under the command of 3 Battalion Chiefs and 1 Deputy Chief per shift. There is also a Safety Battalion(Battalion 6) which responds to all Signal 11's(Working Fires). If manpower permits, Battalion 2 is staffed to make up a 4th Battalion. In 2010, the NFD lost Engine 12, Engine 16, Ladder 1, and Battalion 1 due to budget cuts. The NFD responds to around 45,000 emergency calls annually with a pretty large fire load.

Thank you 'mack" for posting all the photo info for these fire houses. It's a great thread and one that I have put into my "saved files favorites".

And "fdny1075", what can I say but "thank you". I don't know how you do it, but you get alot of information and take the time to post it for us. Thank you and a Great job. And I know this might be a little off track here, but I know him personelly. A young guy who goes to college in New Rochelle, NY and is a volunteer member of the Shelton, Ct Fire Dept. (work wise, the Shelton Fire Dept is the busiest volly dept in the state). A young guy who I feel is a credit to his generation.
