For those with a lot of time on their hands and are interested in the early, and I do mean early, history of what was to become the FDNY is available. Entitled "Our Firemen, a history of NY fire departments 1609-1887" it is 1000+ pages and several copies are available for less than 10 bucks via Amazon. Njoy!

There is another similar history on Amazon:

"Our Firemen: The Official History of the Brooklyn Fire Department, from the First Volunteer to the Latest Appointee"

If you don't want to buy the book, you can find on-line versions.

My copy of "Birth of the Bravest: A History of the New York Fire Department From 1609 To 1887" arrived today. It clearly states that it is an abridgement of "Our Firemen, a history of NY fire departments 1609-1887". It has roughly 600 pages, so it's slightly more than half of the original, which was published in 1897.
