Hotel Gregory

In a few weeks I am going to be in New York for business and staying at the Hotel Gregory in Brooklyn. If memory seves me, maybe about 30 years ago there was a hell of a fire in teh Hotel Gregory in Brooklyn. Is the one at 8315 4th Ave, one and the same?

If so does anyone have any details/memeories/pictures of the job. I believe it was a cover story on WNYF and you can see the builidng from the VNB.

You're probably thinking of the St. George Hotel fire of Aug 26, 1995. It was a 16-Alarm fire and may have been the biggest fire in New York City history. The main hotel was at 100 Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights. There's an excellent article from Fire Engineering on the fire by former Assistant Chief Steven DeRosa that you can find at:

No, I believe his thinking of the correct fire. There was a multi- alarm fire at that address, but I thought it was an apartment building at the time. Perhaps it was rebuilt as a hotel. The other major Brooklyn hotel fire was the Hotel Margaret in Brooklyn Heights; occurred in the dead of winter with many rigs caked in ice. That was long before either fire mentioned.

That looks like the place.

Based on its history, you'd better wish me luck getting out alive.

Of course if it catches fire again, I will be ideally situated to get some good pictures.

The Hotel Gregory Fire was in 1983 just missed it.... it came in shortly after the change of tours after 0900 ....i was in R*2 then & had just gotten relieved & left the FH (no R*5 yet)..... for some reason i seem to remember it being maybe the 26th or 27th of December.

Made in through my stay OK. Not much of a hotel. Slanted floors, tiny rooms, high price, but decent neighborhood and very comfortable sack.
