On Sunday morning December 11, 1983 there was an ammonia leak at the Borden's Ice Cream plant downtown at Milam and Calhoun Streets. First alarm units were suiting up a plant employee with scba so he could show them where the leak was when the joint blew up. Nobody was hurt, but scaring the daylights out of everybody would have been an understatement, Engine 8's pumper chauffeur was covered with popsicle sticks. A close call!
