There are numerous investigations of this fire in progress including the US Coast Guard which is currently holding hearings.

This Report is an absolute 'Must Read' for anyone concerned w/ Firefighting and FF Safety.

“We can’t find our way out!”

' even as the port grew to become one of the busiest in the nation, it did not seem to be on the radar of anyone responsible for public safety.'

“It’s clear the Newark Fire Department had no program in place to adequately train firefighters for shipboard fires — a known threat, given the largest port on the East Coast is in its city,” -
Edward Kelly, a Boston firefighter and general president of the Washington-based International Association of Fire Fighters

This was my concern on the night of the Fire - that Newark FD did not have adequate resources for The Job.
It turns out that their 1 Boat, as well as their Cascade System, were both o.o.s. w/ No Replacement or
Mutual Aid Coverage arranged.

Agreed. Question is, what is the solution ? The Newark City Administration seems to be in denial. There are mechanisms for the State to intervene in municipalities when they are fiscally mismanaged. As far as I know nothing similiar exists when an FD doesn't fulfil its responsibilities.

Where is the Port Authority in all this too? They have more than enough $$ to buy all sorts of fancy rigs for the bridges and tunnels, why do they only provide a police presence at their largest property? Or require terminal operators to maintain their own firefighting fleet?

Newark FD was clearly underprepared to the point of criminal negligence here, but they aren't the only party to blame.

I hope going forward the City of Newark and the State of New Jersey do the right thing in the wake of this. DFS can intervene when it’s a matter of certifications/ qualifications, task force issues etc. There is a state fire coordinator that oversees the IASI counties and their respective assets.

Interesting article in The Chief newspaper dated 1/26/2024 page 6. Newark FD Union leadership and the families of the two Newark FF's who perished in the ship fire call for the resignation of the Newark FD leadership. Also mentioned is testimony at the Coast Guard hearing is that Newark FD never formally requested FDNY response to the ship fire but that someone from another Department outside of Newark contacted someone in the FDNY to ask that they respond due to the lack of leadership by the Newark brass.

Just read the article, and yeah the FDNY not being requested by Newark is crazy.
