The concept: Perfectly illustrated

Go to the first movie clip The London Fire Brigade at Southwark Bridge Road 1890's (Southwark Bridge goes across the Thames between Tower and Blackfriars Bridges, the Brigade Station is about ten streets south on the west side, built in 1878 on a burial ground for the Great Plague in1665, could accommodate 52 firemen-28 married, 14 horses, 16 engines, and 20 fire escapes and served then as Brigade Headquarters).

Pay close attention to the first twenty seconds. Ignore the horse-drawn tram with the fireworks advertisement.

In a lot of departments it's known as a "company still alarm". In New York City, the Regulations for the Uniformed Force define it as a "Verbal Alarm". In the London Fire Brigade it's known as a "Running Call".

Great attention-to-detail. It does appear to be a "verbal alarm".

Across the road from the Southwark Station is the 600 odd foot long Lant Street (named after the Lant family, not the household cleaner or explosive urine precursor). In the 1820's Charles Dickens lived there. Hollywood used a mockup of the street for the star-studded 1935 movie adaptation of Dicken's novel "David Copperfield". The station itself had a 78 foot watchtower connected to the watch room downstairs by a speaking tube. Brigade headquarters was subsequently moved to the ten story new Lambeth Station across the Thames on the Albert Embankment and opened by King George VI in July, 1937. The Southwark area would be heavily bombed during the London Blitz.
