The fire was deep seated below ground level in an old victorian building being used as a hair and beauty products storage and wholesale facility.

The fire is thought to have started at the rear of the premises and spread very quickly due to the already dry condiotions and more so due tomthe fire loading, with aerosols, chemicals, wigs etc being stored in bulk withing the building.

The fire was originally at its most intense at basement level, and this is where initial firefighting efforts took place, however due to the confusing layout of the building, itself being modernised interanlly with flase walls and ceilings, the crews were fighting a loosing battle from the start. Crews were rotated down into the basement level of the fire for some time in attempts to battle the intense and heavilly fuelled fire.

It was whilst carrying out firefighting duties, approx 6 hours into the job, that a crew three BA wearers experienced conditions of extreme heat, and transmitted a BA emergency, a UK recognised distress call for firefighters. Two crew members managed to carry the third, fatally injured firefighter from the premises, where they were handed over to medical services.

Unfortunately FF Stephen Hunt, aged 38, of Phillips Park Fire Sation in Manchester died of his injuries sustained at this fire. Stephen leaves a son, daughter and wife. His familly have been informed and have given a statement to the BBC.

Firefighter Stephen Hunt joined Greater Manchester Fire And Rescue Service in 2008, after serving in the British Army for seven years.

Indeed as reported, two 15 year old girls were arrested on suspician of manslaughter, and have been bailed until september. Eye witensses state that teenagers were seen running from the rear of the building as the fire was discovered, with one teenager stating one of them had been smoking.

My thoughts and prayers to Stephens family, his collueagues and those who were fighting beside him yesterday at that very difficult and testing fire.

Prayers to family, may he rest in peace. Who the &*)@ who bail out anyone whose actions resulted in the death of a fire-fighter. Liberal sense of justice, if they had killed a judge would bail be an issue? Think not!    :'( :'( :'( :( :(
