Santarpio’s Is Evacuated, but Spared from Five-Alarm Fire

The legendary pizzeria received superficial, exterior damage from the nearby blaze. Twelve people are displaced.

“We have damage to the building and some broken windows (and doors, courtesy of the BFD),” she says. “We are extraordinarily lucky. The BFD did an amazing job saving our neighbors’ lives and our family business. Fortunately all of our employees and patrons are safe.”

PREVIOUSLY:

In last night’s 90-degree heat, a fire ripped through a two-story duplex in East Boston, right next door to pretty much everybody’s favorite pizza joint, the 100-plus-year-old Santarpio’s. Luckily, the pizzeria only received superficial damage, according to news reports, and no neighbors were injured.

Around 7:20 p.m. on Friday, July 22, a resident of one of the units at 107-109 Chelsea St. plugged in an air conditioning unit, which caused sparks to fly, 7 News reports. Quickly, the flames climbed up the structure, with temperatures still in the 90s causing Boston Fire Department to sound a fifth alarm, the Boston Globe reports. Nine adults and three children are displaced. Two of the six units in the building were vacant, according to the Globe.

With the buildings on the East Boston block as close as five feet from each other, it was a challenge to contain the fire, Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald told the Globe, but Santarpio’s Pizza was mostly spared. The flames melted some siding on the building, but the interior is undamaged. Santarpio’s was evacuated during Friday night dinner service, and remained closed for the rest of the night.

Santarpio’s, which first opened in 1903, is known for simple pies—which many argue are the best in Boston—as well as grilled sausage, steak tips, and lamb skewers. (Pro tip: No need to ask for a menu. Act like you’ve been there before.) The pizzeria is a chef favorite, and a multi-year Best of Boston award-winner.

Firefighters deliver pizza after delivery guy gets into crash

h.gif

Firefighters near Rochester, NY, weren’t going to let a pizza customer go unsatisfied after the delivery driver got into a car crash.

Engine 642 of the Henrietta Fire District, in West Henrietta, responded to the wreck Saturday afternoon, in which a pizza delivery employee was injured.

“Once the patient was cared for and loaded into the ambulance the crew decided to finish the delivery so the pizza wouldn’t go to waste,” the department wrote on Facebook.

Henrietta Fire joked online, “If its not delivery its Di…Fire dept?!” — a play on DiGiorno frozen pizza’s famous tagline.

After the firefighters delivered the pizza, they “thanked the customer for deciding to order out and not risk burning food and setting off the fire alarm!”

HOUSTON -- The Astros Foundation arranged for 470 Papa John’s pizzas to be delivered to all 94 Houston Fire Department stations this week, the team announced on Wednesday.

“Providing lunch is a small way for us to say thank you to so many of the first responders in our city,” Astros owner Jim Crane said in a statement. “They truly are our unsung heroes. We wanted to show them how much they are appreciated. Papa John’s is a longtime partner of the Astros, and they were happy to support us in this gesture.”

Marty Lancton, the president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association, expressed his gratitude in a statement.
“Your provision of pizza to every fire station in the city was appreciated by the 4,000 men and women of our fire department,” Lancton said. “We thank you for your good work in the community. And, we thank you for another great moment in the long friendship between the Astros and Houston firefighters.”

This week’s pizza delivery was one of several community outreach initiatives spearheaded by the Astros Foundation in recent days, including Wednesday’s PPE Drive at Minute Maid Park. This initiative included a $400,000 donation from the Astros Foundation.
