From Jack Lerch in the Mar-Apr issue of Fire apparatus Journal:

"The bidding procedure for a three-year contract to construct 95-foot tower ladders was held on Dec 7, 2010.  This currently calls for the building of two such units, with provision for adding-on additional 95-foot tower ladders during the three year period of agreement.  It is most likely that several more such units will be ordered.  The only two bidders for the contract were Seagrave and Ferrara.  As of this writing, the contract had not yet been awarded."

I'm surprised only 2 companies are bidding. I'm hoping that Ferrara gets the contract because of the problems with the Seagraves
I know what you're talking about but at least the Seagraves are a known commodity.  FDNY has very little experience with the Ferrara's.  It would be nice to get some more experience before putting too many eggs in one basket and don't know about!

According to Seagrave's posting on Facebook, they just got an order for 15 95 footers.

According to Jack Lerch:

The contract awarded is for  FOURTEEN  95' towers,  with the first two EXPECTED to go to TL 107 and TL 172

The current fleet consists of:

(2)  1995's:  L172 and the BOT

(6)  2001's:  L 14, 119, 121, 152, 161, 163

(5)  2002's:  L 12, 44, 51, 58, 117

(1)  2001 awaiting disposal, does not list  company, perhaps 107

The two assigned to L172 and BOT (ex L12) are both 1999's - not 1995's.  All of the 1995 towers were 75' FWD's.

That's what Jack wrote in the March/April edition of FAJ.  It would make more sense that they are 1999's.

Thanks for the info.

I was reading today that the FDNY backed out on the contract for the 95 foot Tower Ladders and is only going with the 75 foot towers. If true does this mean that FDNY is going to do away with the 95ft towers or for money reasons did they do this?

If that's true, there could be a lot of reasons. Personally, the job needs them. The drawbacks to them are weight and length. I remember 50 Truck being given a 75 footer because a 95 footer would no longer fit in quarters. Truth be told, good riddance to the one over at 51 Truck. That thing has been out of service more times than it's been in service.

Is there any news on whether or not FDNY is getting further new 95 footers or replacing them with 75 foot towers??

Seagrave website states the FDNY has ordered 12 new 95' TL'S and added on 8 75' to that order. This is dated 9/01/11 I have not heard anything else about this and as far as I know it is not cancelled.

I recall seeing the 2002 batch of 95' TL's had a different confrigaration for the boom pistons, kinda like the new rearmount Ferrara's. Any reason why that configuration was not used again? I see the new 75' TL's have the long pistons again from the turntable to the boom. Any reason for not using the design again?

Those do look like the 75 footers, just with a 95 foot boom and longer rear to them.
