Firefighters responded early Monday morning to a multi-home fire that ripped through the Neptune Park neighborhood in New London.
One home on Mott Avenue was completely destroyed in the blaze that spread to at least five other homes, according to New London Police Chief Thomas Curcio.

Curcio said the house where the fire started was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene following reports of a house fire. Shortly after, several calls streamed in reporting fires at nearby homes.
“The wind blowing [the fire] started fires on other homes,” said Curcio. “The wine was carrying hot embers to the houses across the street.”
Two homes behind the house were damaged along with at least three to four other homes. City and fire officials had to shut down power to an entire grid in the area as they battled the flames, Curcio said.
One firefighter was injured battling the blaze, suffering an injury to his knee. He was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Curcio said.
No residents were injured in any of the fires. One man was in one of the homes that caught fire, but he escaped safely, Curcio said.
The people who live in the home where the fire started were not home at the time of the blaze but were headed back to New London this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, Curcio said.
Investigators did not know what caused the fire.
“It’s going to be quite a while to investigate that and figure that out,” said Curcio.
Firefighters and emergency medical responders were on the scene from Groton, Norwich, Poquonnock Bridge and Mohegan Tribe departments, Curcio said.
“It’s going to be an extended multi-day effort,” the chief said.

Thank you sir. NY native; central CT resident. Been lurking here with and without a handle for a long time. Lots of respect and fascination with the bravery of first responders. Will make an effort to contribute items of interest more often. Sorry about the Courant's boo-boo but unfortunately typical of them in recent years!

This is a tough neighborhood related to firefighting. Most of the homes are fairly large, turn-of-the-century aged and are about 6-8 feet apart. It is a seasonal area, so many homes are unoccupied during winter months. The first due engine company (Engine 3) is about 3 minutes away and is staffed by an officer and two firefighters. Secondary wires came down on the first due engine as they pulled up to the scene.

Hurricane windows on an exposure building proved to be challenging and would be worth a discussion on a separate thread. A total of five buildings received damage from this fire, with one being a total loss.

Brothers and Sisters, it looks like a High Caliber Stream/Transitional Attack upon arrival by 1st due Engine is in order. This may have been done I don't have enough information to know for sure. Brother and sisters, the old concept of firefighting is "Locate Confine and Extinguish." I am sure that it is easy to talk about and hard to do, such an advanced fire in a wind prone area is real challenge. Consider rig mounted and portable Large Caliber Stream plus 2 1/2" hoselines and always consider the possibility of fire building collapse. Stay safe you'll.
