NOFD BATTLES FOUR ALARM FIRE IN CENTRAL CITY
April 20, 2022This incident has been placed under control as of 2:39 p.m.
New Orleans, LA- On Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 5:23 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 911 call reporting a residential fire with the possibility of persons trapped at the corner of Thalia and S. Saratoga Streets. Dispatched immediately, the first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 5:27 a.m. After determining that all occupants had escaped safely, firefighters made requests for second and third alarms at 5:31 a.m. Upon NOFD arrival, the fire had already consumed the rear of an occupied two-story multi-unit dwelling at 1333 S. Saratoga St. A fourth alarm was requested at 5:47 a.m., as the fire continued to extend through the roof of what may have originally been some type of mixed-use structure with a commercial occupant on the first floor and at least six apartments on the second floor and rear.
At its peak, this fire extended to an abandoned two-story, multi-unit dwelling in the 2100 block of Thalia St. (at the rear of the original fire building) causing extensive damage. Embers from this fire were also blown onto the roof of an occupied two-story tenement building at 2124 Thalia St., setting the roof on fire and prompting the evacuation of all five residents. Firefighters did a miraculous job of saving a recently renovated single story duplex at 1327-29 S. Saratoga St., just a few feet away from the original fire building.
Twenty-three NOFD units carrying sixty-eight Fire Operations personnel were used in the mitigation of this incident. Firefighters are currently still on the scene and will likely maintain a presence there for most of the day in assurance that smoldering debris doesn’t rekindle. There were no NOFD or civilian injuries reported and investigators are on the scene attempting to determine the cause of this fire.
