In Brooklyn during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s I always heard the aerial referred to as “the aerial” or “the ladder” (I still do to this day). It wasn’t until I moved to Texas in the early 90’s that I heard the aerial called “the stick”. That was new (and alien) to me.

Here in PA through the years, 70's until present, l've heard several times on scanner '' put the stick up''.

I never heard anyone in the field refer to Aerial Ladders as Sticks.
I used the term stick on our aerial all the time. Used it interchangeably with aerial or ladder but mostly stick. I think and don't quote me on this the name goes back to when the aerials were made of wood. Seagrave makes a ladder called a Meanstick.

Would anyone with decent knowledge be able to help me better understand the following: Is it now policy that upon inspection by the Shops / Manufacturer - the rig then is greenlit and goes in to have graphics installed, then once graphics are added it goes back in for a final inspection then off to the company in service it goes ?

I think it depends on the manufacturer and the contract. I can't speak for FDNYs rigs but all of the rigs my dept has purchased, theres certain milestones so to speak. When the rig was complete, there was a factory inspection to see the rig and what may or may not have to be corrected. Then there's a dealer inspection after they install what ever options at the dealership. Then it came to us for training and equipment installation before going out on the road. So basically after each step, there was an inspection to make sure everything was right. Some depts, like FDNY do their own acceptance tests for what ever the reason. Which is another step in the process.

Once the rig arrives at seagrave nj, they do their inspection, once complete, it either goes for lettering or goes to the city shops for their inspection, and pump test. After pump test, the rig goes back to seagrave, "if needed" for any repairs and or lettering if it wasn't done yet. once complete the rig will go back to the city, for their final inspection, and the city shops mounts the equipment, and goes in service
