Workers are busy constructing a new fire station next to a busy shopping center in Vestal.
The building will be located just south of the Kohl's department store in the Parkway Plaza. The site is east of the PetSmart, Dick's Sporting Goods Warehouse Sale and Target stores.

A former American Legion clubhouse that had been on the property for six decades was demolished in September to clear the way for the fire station project.
The Vestal Fire District acquired the three-and-a-half acre site in 2018 for $607,000. Last January, voters authorized the borrowing of $7.5 million to build a 15,000-square-foot station.
Many town residents may be unaware that the construction project is underway. According to the fire department website, "several people showed up showed up to vote at (the) Legion" last month and "were a little surprised!"

The fire department's current Station 4 is located on the Vestal Parkway, a short distance northeast of the site of the new complex. The station was built in 1952. It has about 9,000 square feet of space compared to the 15,000 square feet that will be available in the future facility.
The new fire station is expected to be operational by the end of 2023. The site of the existing station is to be sold after it is decommissioned.
