New York,NY New Tracking Devices For City Vehicles

I wonder how long it will be before New York start using the approach many cities have used and install GPS units on all Fire, Police and EMS vehicles?  The CAD system can then select the closest units to dispatch automatically instead of just depending on conventional information.  Especially in the case of EMS and Police It Can Reduce Response Times Significantly.

A few years back some of the new FDNY ambulances came with GPS as a test. Didn't work out too well. No matter what you programmed in, it always said make a left and you always started in Toronto. That was that ???

I'm not saying to use the GPS to give you directions to reach the scene but rather to help dispatch the unit closest to the scene.  Standard dispatch criteria always assumes that a unit is at its station but quite often that isn't the case.  Many cities use this type of system to reduce response times significantly.

This was a post question I did 2 years ago. Chicago FD units have GPS, but it does not pick up units on the street. EG Engine 127 your location?
