Well as someone who was supposed to be on said Rescue in March, before I made my career change I am rather well equipped to answer this. UH EMS R1 goes to all technical rescue calls in the city if available, all fires, all MVAs, all CPRs and any complicated lift assists mainly those which need the bariatric ambulance (their second piece) or the use of a rope system which is more often then you'd think. It is only staffed with two Rescue Specialists, both full time EMTs, although other members who are trained can take shifts if the full timers are away. In the above video on of the members is actually a supervisor riding R1 for the day. They wear the unique grey shirts and denim jackets as uniforms. It's an extremely busy unit and one of the few EMS based heavy rescues in the country. They work in tamden with NFD R1 and NPD ESU. Recently they've unified the training between the three of them to make a smoother SOC program for the city. It's amazing how much just two well training and expierneced guys can do. Unfortunately, the pay isn't great in comparison to their fire peers and many leave. With that said Jersey City R1, Newark R1, Nutley Fire, Perth Amboy Fire, Elizabeth Fire and many more are the new homes of alumni of the unit.
