Update from NNFD at 11:15AM:

"NNFD crews remain on scene at a 2-alarm structure fire at Newport Landing Apartments.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke showing from the building and initiated an aggressive interior attack utilizing multiple handlines. Vertical ventilation operations were conducted to help control fire spread and improve conditions inside the structure.
As fire conditions intensified and the fire became well advanced within the building, crews were withdrawn from the structure and operations transitioned to a defensive attack. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, firefighters re-entered the building to extinguish remaining hot spots and begin overhaul operations.
Firefighters conducted searches for two pets believed to be inside the structure. Sadly, one pet succumbed to the fire. No injuries to civilians or emergency personnel have been reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Residents and motorists should expect traffic impacts in the area and are encouraged to avoid the scene if possible.
Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available."
