(Newport News, VA) – At 10:43 AM, on April 25, 2022, the City of Newport News Fire Department received a 911-call reporting smoke inside the Continental Manufacturing building in the 600 block of Bland Boulevard. Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke inside the business. Both the size of the business and the conditions inside the building necessitated a second-alarm response. Firefighters found and extinguished a fire inside a large industrial dust collector and attached ductwork. There were no injuries to staff or firefighters. The fire was brought under control within 30-minutes and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Newport News Fire Marshal’s Office.
Continental bought this plant from Siemens a number of years ago. It produces fuel injection and hydraulic system parts, and is scheduled to close at the end of next year, putting more than 750 people out of work.
