Sad Loss again. We firefighters/fire officers must always ensure that all firefighters operate with at least another firefighter when firefighting in an Areas Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health, if at all possible. Operating in such a way that should he/she become trapped or incapacitated that someone else is there to assist them. I know this can be very difficult when manpower is in short supply, if this decision is being made always ask yourself and others "What are we doing here?" & "What are we trying to accomplish?" Great articles & check lists have been introduced that show the Incident Commander situations and radio transmissions when the increased likelihood of Maydays!" and dangerous situation will follow shortly. NEVER have a situation where no F.A.S.T./R.I.T. or at least 2 firefighters are available to save/rescue members in destress. I.C.s if you have NOBODY standing by ready to go to work you are not doing your job. In this case the I.C. had a unit ready to try to save the member in the attic and gave him/her a chance and being saved. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
