NY Post: FDNY To Consider Hiring Felons

This has been done before in Bridgeport, Ct. "Just cause some dude has got a few felony charges, don't mean he can't be a firefighter". Those aren't my words, I'm just quoting somebody. One felon that was hired in Bridgeport a few years ago was the driver of a get-away-car in a double homicide. They said, "he didn't actually pull the triger so why no let him be a firefighter. Meantime, a thousand other NON Felons couldn't get the job they worked so hard to try and get.

How about we hire a few child molesters as first grade teachers.

It's not like there's a shortage of people who would like to be FDNY Firefighters. It's had a reputation as being the Best Fire Dept in the World. I wonder if this will change it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this decision was made by NYFD.  It looks like it stems from the liberals in Albany who know what's best for everyone in the state!  It's time that the citizens of New York woke up and elected some reasonable people to the state legislature and to fill the governor's office!

So in other words an individual who has been a guest of the state due to his felony conviction is treated the same as a man or woman who has put their butt on the line for us. I am sorry, I do not understand this BS. I am old, old school, the only reason I have a cell phone is because my company pays for it. I am not that important, the world will not end if I do not make a decision on white or wheat bread on the phone. We as a society of normal thinking people are screwed. All you liberals can kiss my a@@, the only way you can be liberal is because someone has decided to do a distasteful job. Like they say, Freedom does not come easy" someone writes the check but someone else has to endorse it!! Would you endorse that check, think not. GG >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Sums up my feelings.

Maybe this would not be a bad idea for FDNY.  There are a lot of postives.

Maybe inmates can get preference for serving time, just like veterans get preference for serving their nation.  Thank you politicians and judges.

Mack: you and I both know vets get very little preferance anymore. Back in Boston I would get veteran points and also points for being wounded in combat. But the liberals with no taste for duty to country or combat got another liberal judge to say it was illegal. Hell I was in a combat situation while you were having a good time with (girl from Full Metal Jacket). But hell I got an education NO college will give you! By the way, in Cook County (Chicago) the Sheriff hires only vets, my son works @ Cook County Jail with other vets. Thank you Sherriff Tom Dart. Never forget, never leave behind a brother. Is Ladder 15 still doing a lot of runs? Great company, great house!

FDNY FELON FIREFIGHTERS
FDNY: Felons Welcome
NY POST - By SUSAN EDELMAN

New York?s Bravest can also be the baddest.

The FDNY will consider hiring convicted felons with a ?Certificate of Good Conduct? from the state parole board, the department said in a notice posted last week. Such applicants will get a ?special review.?

The notice to potential applicants includes the text of a state law aimed at stopping employment discrimination against ex-cons who have done time and stayed clean.

?It?s not something we signed up for or control. It?s something we have to abide by,? said FDNY spokesman Jim Long.

Sources said the posting stems from the court case in which Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis has ordered the FDNY to remedy racial imbalances.

?This is the first time I?ve ever seen the FDNY say, ?Hey, this is something you can do,? ? said Paul Mannix, an FDNY deputy chief and president of Merit Matters, a group opposed to hiring quotas.

Mannix said he doesn?t object to the exception for felons ?as long as it?s applied equally.?

The city?s notice of exams for firefighter applicants still states that convicted felons ?are not eligible for appointment to this position.?

Firefighters are designated peace officers who may conduct searches and issue summonses. A fire marshal can carry a gun.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said no exceptions apply to cops: ?A felony conviction is an absolute bar to employment as a police officer,? he said.

MERIT MATTERS
Clarification on Hiring Felons

A New York Post story today reports that the FDNY has posted links directing Candidates that have felony convictions how to apply for Certificates that would allow them to be hired by the FDNY. The story quotes me saying that I don?t object to the exception for felons ?as long as it?s applied equally?, and that?s true ? but incomplete.
I don?t object to someone being given a second chance, depending upon the circumstances of each individual case and there being strong, verifiable evidence that the person involved is truly repentant and has exhibited this repentance over a long period of time. One of my statements that wasn?t included in the reporting is that, ?I don?t want these Certificates handed out like candy?.
I also pointed out that the FDNY has never before highlighted this section of NYS law, but is doing so now in the midst of unrelenting pressure to hire blacks and Hispanics. I would like to question the person(s) responsible for having this information posted to determine if they believe black and Hispanic Candidates are more likely to be felons, thus accounting for the decision to post this information. If so, this is an incredibly offensive belief.
I don?t believe the Post or the writer have any bias or animus toward me or Merit Matters; I understand there are space considerations and not everything can be reported every time. Still, I wanted to make my position clear.
As always, I am available to answer any questions anyone may have.

mack, I sure did appreciate this post. It was worth a few laughs. But I guess the reality is, "it could be the facts".
