It has been reported that the FDNY EMS crews faced a 19 % shortage on Christmas day due to the Omicron wave hitting the city
The shortage continues in part by crews isolating with Covid-19 cases. Just as the city's daily number of cases continue on a record breaking streak.
The FDNY EMS over the holiday handled about 4,500 ambulance calls per day, with too few crews to get the job done.
Personnel leave is on hold and most training classes have been suspended.
The departments cap on overtime work for the EMS workers has been eliminated and the city will allow FDNY EMS workers to work shifts up to 18 hours at their discretion.
Local 3621 vice president, Anthony Alomojera, called it "The Perfect Storm".
"You have pandemic burnout and an incredibly young workforce, a majority having less than 5 years on the job.
The EMTs and Medics have been doing a good job , but the job has been run into the ground by the city".
Alomojera spent the day cooking a Christmas meal for the dozen EMS workers out of Station 40, but he didn't think the crews would get a chance to sit down for the meal.
