SUBJECT: The inside view of a New York Firefighter; born into an FDNY family, becoming a buff, entering the Fire Patrol, then NYPD, and his dream coming true – FDNY.
Bill Carlson, proud son of Chief Howie and Jayne Carlson, was born and raised in Richmond Hill, Queens. He attended Archbishop Molloy High School where he met great friends, some who would also join the FDNY. It was at Molloy where the Marist Brothers instilled in him many of the lessons on peer mentoring and giving back to the community.
Having “Howie” as his father exposed Bill to the fire service early on. His first fire, rumor has it, was when his mom Jayne ended up at a fire while pregnant with young William. On numerous occasions, Bill’s dad would grab his son and respond to a good “job.” This response would commonly be referred to as “three, two, and the Carlsons.
Bill’s interest in the fire service led him to join the New York City Fire Patrol while attending John Jay College. He was assigned to Patrol 2 on West 3rd Street in Greenwich Village.
In 1987, while waiting to get into the FDNY, Bill joined the NYPD and was eventually assigned to the 83 Precinct in Bushwick, Brooklyn. His precinct was the center of the most violence in not just NYC, but the country.
Finally, in 1991, Billy joined the FDNY. It was a dream come true. He was assigned to Engine 235 in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. He was blessed to have been guided by amazing officers and knowledgeable firefighters. Bill would go on to work in Ladder 111 in the same response area of Brooklyn.
As the FDNY was working to rebuild after 9/11, Bill transferred to a battalion that was hit very hard and assigned to Ladder 4 in Times Square. The knowledge and tactics from Brooklyn were passed on to the young firefighters in midtown as the FDNY was taking on the task of rebuilding.
Bill returned to Brooklyn in 2010 and challenged himself when assigned to Squad 1. There was much to learn through great training in an unbelievable response area, and plenty of work!
Wanting to give back, a lesson taught at Molloy High School, Bill volunteered with foundations and groups such as The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation. Through the foundation he volunteered at a camp for burn survivors for over twenty years. He has also volunteered with FDNY CSU as a peer counselor, talking to firehouses and its members. It’s a program that has helped him through some difficult times.
Everyone knows that Bill loves music and it’s that same music that’s gotten him through tough times. Many have been a part of some of those music moments, from the Allman Brothers at The Beacon, or Dark Star Orchestra at Pier 17.
Bill is blessed to have such wonderful parents to guide him down the right roads, a wonderful wife, family, friends, and coworkers. Bill is so thankful and so proud to be a member of the greatest family in the world: The FDNY!
