Though the aerial photos are pretty low res, there are a lot of other good features on the DOITT map. You can zoom in on streets, including unnamed back alleys, click on buildings and get detailed information,. Clicking
"User Guide" at top gives a 31 page downloadable PDF manual telling how to navigate, search, and save images.
Clicking
"Show Additional Data on Map" at lower right lets you choose to display such things as firehouses, precincts, hospitals, subway lines and stations, even bicycle lanes. Mousing over icons displays further infomation on the object, extensive building information can be accessed including violations, etc.
You can also overlay borders for Company, Battalion, and Division Admin Districts; ZIP Codes; Community Boards; Council and Congressional Districts; and Precinct Boundaries. Map images can be saved in PDF or PNG (similar to JPG) formats.
Due to the extent of information, I suppose not all is updated every day. Like any tool, it takes a little getting used to - but once you know it I think it has Google Earth way surpassed for NYC info. And before you search too hard - Box Locations are not yet included.
