At approximately 8:30 Wednesday a massive explosion occurred at a grain silo in Peoria. Two grain bins were toppled over in an explosion officials said was caused when grain dust was ignited by a spark. Peoria fire officials said units will be on the scene for several days. Several agencies are investigating including the ATF.

I've buffed two of those grain elevator explosions in years past. What mere dust can do is just jaw dropping.

When the Jacinto City Elevator exploded in February, 1976, Houston stilled out Engine 23 to check thing out (it's OCL). From at least two miles away, the Captain requested additional help. The dispatcher then asked exactly what he wanted. He replied "Whatever you send when there's complete destruction".

Think that might have been on "Engineering Catastrophees".

This has been an onging incident with an engine company detailed during the daylight hours for flare-ups. There has been a report of smoke from one of the demolished bins but fire officials are more concerned with a collapse of the bin. These bins are still full of product so this situation will continue to occupy Peoria fire units.
