Don't know anything about how Virginia operates but what kind of inspection was out of date on the engine company? Unless it was something extremely critical it seemed like keeping the engine in service would have been a much better alternative.

Petersburg has been in deep doo-doo for a long time now. Not just the FD, but the whole city government, the schools, etc. The attached news article is six years old . . . but nothing has changed, unless it has gotten worse. When was the last time you heard of a piece of fire apparatus being grabbed by the Repo Man?

Several years ago due to poor maintenece habits, old equipment, poor fiscal management and a host of other reasons Gary IN had two pieces in active service. They received two demo pieces which ended up OOS as well. Not a city that can exist on 2 companies considering the large number of vacant buildings.

How does the state EMS regulatory agency have the ability to prevent a fire engine from
Responding to fires. They can shut down ambulances and medic units for such an infraction. They can order the fire engine to not respond to EMS calls as an medic unit. But the engine can still remain in service for fire and non EMS runs. At least that’s the way it is in most states There’s got to be more to the story. Great post though. Thanks for sharing.
