An extremely smoky fire, involving burlap bags and bales of rags, broke out in the five -story brick Pottash Brothers’ burlap warehouse, at 611-13 North American Street. Firemen, using large-caliber streams, were making an interior attack on the fire when, without warning, the front wall collapsed. With that, the floors of the building then collapsed, burying close to 30 men under tons of rubble. The fire truck that stood in the street in front of the warehouse was buried under tons of debris. Six men were killed in the collapse and 23 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Sadly, LeGrand had just been married only two months earlier. The fire went to four alarms.
