On 12/20/1970, the Tucson Fire Department had 79 firemen, 3 chiefs, and 3 dispatchers on duty manning 13 engines, 4 ladders and 5 rescues.

The Pioneer Hotel was an eleven story building at 80 Stone Avenue between Pennington and Alameda. It is believed 700 to 800 people were in the building at the time, mainly for Christmas parties. 60 of the 200 rooms were taken.

Shortly after midnight, an arsonist set several fires in the tower. 29 people would die, all between the 6th and 11th floors. 43 people were injured including 19 TFD members.

At 12:19 A.M., the bells hit for a go at the Pioneer Hotel.
