As I understand it, the Providence, R.I. Fire Department is still accepting applications.
I believe they plan to hire 35 - 50 individuals during the life of the hiring list.
I know of one captain and one newly promoted battalion chief that retired this past week, Dec 12 - 17th.
The department currently operates each shift with:
12 (3 or 4 manned) Engine Companies
5 (3 - ? or 4 manned) Ladder Companies
1 (4 manned) Heavy Rescue Company, called "Special Hazards 1"
7 (2 manned) Rescue Ambulances
Also;
1 Deputy Chief - Division 1
4 Battalion Chiefs
1 Safety Battalion
Each firefighter having under 20 years, must work a six month period on one of the Rescue Ambulances on a rotating basis.
However, any firefighter having less than five years gets full top firefighter pay while working those ambulances.
As a result, many younger members offer to cover the six months of a more senior member, so they can receive that top pay rate
Plus an ambulance is always assigned to any working fire/or a serious event.
I'm told it seems to work well.
