Rash of Detached Garage Fires in Nassau 4/13 - 4/15/22

There has been a rash of detached garage fires keeping Nassau County FDs busy the last few days. There have been fires in Elmont, Wantagh and Rockville Centre. No indication of any connection between them.

The Wantagh Fire Department operated on the scene of a detached garage fire on Ring Lane off Saddle Lane on the evening of Thursday, April 14th, 2022. Firefighters put one hand line into operation off Wantagh Engine 692 and had the main body of fire quickly knocked down. There were no injuries...

In South Jamaica the detached garages were often referred to as "Cottages" or 'Bungalows" since many had people illegally living in them....ACs ...heaters etc.....several 10-45-1s thru the years.....one in particular had the victim sleeping in the rafters which was made into a sort of loft & that one still had the car parked inside....you never know....also some FFs received serious injuries in unexpected collapses while searching these structures.
