On this day……
August 9,
1906, Fire Commissioner Benjamin Wells adopted a suggestion that his car and the one used by Chief of Department John A. Mullen to be equipped with red lanterns for use at night. A police officer made the recommendation as he said there had been an incident a week or so before when he heard the loud whistle of the chief’s car coming. He cleared the traffic but an auto with four men went by followed closely by the chief’s car. If the car had been equipped with red lights, the police officer would know which was which and not be fooled.
