Rescue 3 covers the Bronx & Harlem in their response area , Rescue 1 has Manhattan below 125th , Rescue 4 has Queens , Rescue 2 has Brooklyn & Rescue 5 has Staten Island. Let's say if Rescue 3 is not available , they are at another job in the Bronx , than there is another job in Harlem will Rescue 1 respond to Harlem for that job ? I remember last week on City Island for that Jumper in the water box 4521 , Rescue 3 had problems with the rig , Rescue 4 was the first due rescue than Rescue 1 was requested , but than turned around because Rescue 3 became available. Also would Rescue 2 respond to Staten Island if Rescue 5 isn't available ? I've seen Rescue 5 go into Brooklyn plenty of times. Thank you.

Theres a chart for each batt for which rescues are first call and then  second and so on

Also, in response to your statement "Firebuff", Rescue 5 is assigned FIRST DUE to parts of lower Brooklyn.

Are they really ? Cool , I have another question , is Rescue 5 the slowest Rescue in the City being based out of Staten Island an only beig First due in some parts of Lower Brooklyn ?

For 2011:  RUNS    WORKERS
Rescue 1  2381            913
          2  2759            843
          3  1618            468
          4  2186            617
          5  1543            502

Rescue 4 also has Manhattan assignments - Roosevelt Island.

OK, here we go. Rescue 3 covers all of the Bronx, plus a chunk of Manhattan. That chunk is north of a squiggly line that goes from about 129th or 130th Street on the West side, down to about 117th or 115th on the east, depending on the box.  Had a job at 117 and Pleasant the other day, and that was a Rescue 1 Box. Coulda sworn myself it was R-3.

Rescue 1 covers everything below that, along with the Battery Tunnel with R-2.

R-2 covers about 85/90% of Brooklyn, with R-5 heading into boxes in the 8th Division, like in Coney Island, Bay Ridge, etc. Then R-4 into Greenpoint in the 45 Battalion's area(Think E-238 first due).

R-4 covers all of Queens, and Roosevelt Island in Manhattan, and that aforementioned little bit of Brooklyn.

Now, depending on which Battalion the incident is in will dictate who the back up Rescue is going to be if the normally assigned Rescue is unavailable.
Example, fire is on East 53 and Lexington, and R-1 is tied up at something downtown. Rescue 4 responds.

The City Island incident was a situation where R-3 broke down, and R-4 was sent to replace them, because they are next up. R-1, if I remember right, was requested because R-4 anticipated putting divers in the water. If any Rescue puts divers in the water, a 2nd Rescue is special called to provide back up.

And yes, if R-5 is unavailable, R-2 goes to SI.
