Reserve apparatus

Hi friends,

I'm in NYC at this time.

I saw a few FDNY vehicles and each time they were reserves apparatus (E10, E54, L21, L161).

It's a streak of bad luck 😁

In the FDNY they are different things. Reserves (500’s for Engines, 600 for the Tower Ladder, 700’s for Ladders, and 800 for the Squad) are equipped and basically ready to go into service if needed in moments.

Spares are completely empty and when a company needs to move to a spare they must transfer all equipment from their regular unit.

Reserves are typically used for extra staffing during special events or sometimes storms I think. Spares are for when a company regular unit is going to the shops or is unavailable for a period of time.

If a company's regular apparatus is going to be down for a couple of hours would it be possible for them to use a reserve rig, especially if it is stored at their firehouse?
 
Fleet also has a couple that can be used for an hour or 2 I think. I think they are stocked and ready to go

I'm pretty sure if it's for under 12 hours, the company gets assigned a reserve. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong
