Response Policy

Has the new FDNY response policy gone citywide, incorperating Bronx and Manhattan as of yet, I understand it was due to live citywide this month. If so has there been any noticable difference in attendance times, especially in Manhattan??

Manhattan  starts modified response on November 1st not sure of the Bronx has started it yet or if they start on the 1st with manhattan
 
A simmilar policy was tried in London, it didnt work, the theory been, that if its a 'shout', then its a shout, if its not, then its not, and should we be actually responding in the first place...

There must be companies out there who when notified of a run for alarms etc, where they are not first due at, and therefore responding under the new policy, where they pull out of the house, sit in traffic outside the house for a few minutes or 5 minutes, just to back into the house again, or merely just drive round the block back to the house!! How are the members viewing this new policy, and is it been adhered to?

numerous occasions over past 24 hours while listening into the manhattan freq BCs asked for their response to be on full emergency response, as opposed to the new response. 10-20s given where appropriate.

IMHO how has been and how it should be.

The modified response has been in effect since 11/01 and the only real difference is in the slow no lights siren repsonses, we obey the traffic laws and depending on how far the run is sometimes we dont get to the location. The truck is enjoying the single unit responses in the modified mode. Have not had any runs that needed an upgrade yet. In a usual 24 if we do 15 to 18 runs in the Engine maybe 3 or 4 are modified response for us 2nd or 3rd due. Still not used to just riding around in modified mode but i dont think it will disappear.

I dont think its a bad idea unless Bloomberg is using it for political reasons. Now i would have thought this would have been a good idea to only do this during the pm/early am hours lets say till like 8pm -6 or 7 am hours, since there is less traffic and no need doing 60 with lights and sirens on a empty street at 2 am. But at 2pm when traffic can be a nightmare even in the smallest of side streets ,even the smallest of gas leaks where only the first due companies are responding in emergency mode something could go wrong.  Just my thought.
 
The "empty" streets at 2 A.M. is when lights and the moderate use of siren should be utilized. Most naive drivers believe that there is no other vehicles on the road at that time and speed up and/or jump traffic lights, stop signs, etc. Or we have the intox who just might be able to discern a well lit and audible rig. And of course, 2P.M. traffic is when laying on the siren is of course getting you no where because they just won't move for you.

Cheers for the thoughts f those actually on the rigs. If it makes the job safer for the members then it can only be a good thing. Just a couple of further question from your message, does E81 do 15-20 runs in a 24 hour period on average then??, if thats the case what ballance of those runs are made of fires, ems and alarms??

Are the Trucks getting a quieter time of things now the runs have been downgraded?? Colleague of mine has recently returned from NYC and visited E75/TL33, the engine apparently was never in the house for longer than 30 mins at a time between runs, the truck hardly moved a wheel!!

Hope its ok to ask the above.

E81 does about 4400 calls a year on average, not sure what that is per day but between scheduled medicals, training and other issues when we are OOS that is a fairly high number of responses. We average 1300 or so medical calls. The rest are the fire and emergency runs. All tours vary sometimes we get no EMS runs and other times it seems like all we do is EMS. No rhyme or reason as to why that happens. The reason it seems the engine runs more is that all alarms usually get 3 & 2 depending on the nature of call.
 
As a comparison, In London, we spend about two days a month, all day, 'of the run' (OOS) for what is called 'strategic resource', which is in effect a day training or lectures that cannot be interupted by fire calls, how many days a month does the average FDNY company spend OOS for one reason or another??
