CHICAGO — A retired firefighter was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking Thursday in Morgan Park.
Police said a 65-year-old man, later identified as retired CFD firefighter Dwain Williams, was in the 2400 block of West 118th Street around 2 p.m.
After leaving a popcorn store, Williams was approached by four people who attempted to take the man’s car, police said. One of the people had a gun and fired shots, striking him in the abdomen. Police SAID Williams was able to produce his own gun and fire at the group. It’s unknown if any suspects were shot at this time. He was taken to the Advocate Christ, where he was pronounced dead.

Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th Ward) said he was close to Williams and that he was a decorated hero with 25 years of experience. “I can tell you he was a hero, a 25-year decorated member of The Chicago Fire Department,” O’Shea said. “What a tremendous loss, in his retirement, stopping to support a local business, to be gun downed in another senseless act of violence.”

The suspects are four African American males who fled in a dark-colored four-door sedan, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department said Williams retired as a Lieutenant just two years ago at the age of 63. Carjackings are on the rise in 2020. WGN Investigates found a total of 1,125 carjackings through mid-November, a 124% increase over 2019 and the highest number in any of the last five years.
The shooting was close to Lumes Pancake House, where one person died and four others were wounded while eating earlier this year. No one is in custody as police continue to investigate. If you have any information, you can leave an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com.
