All,
We regret to pass on that longtime Sandy Hook (CT) Fire Chief Bill Halstead, 73, has died after making a run . After responding to a call on the evening of Friday, July 8, the chief returned to his home and became ill. Despite the efforts of SHVFR personnel, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Newtown Police Department officers, the Newtown Paramedics, and the Newtown Emergency Communications Center team, Chief Halstead passed in the Line of Duty shortly after the incident.
Chief Halstead joined the department in 1965 at the age of 16 and has served as Chief of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue since 1978. He lead the department and community following the horrific murders of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Chief was also the career Fire Marshal for Newtown prior to his retirement in 2016.
He was a deeply respected fire service leader beyond his community including statewide and nationally. Our condolences to the SHVFD as well as all those affected by the loss of Chief Halstead. Rest In Peace.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass It On.
