Seaside Park (Ocean) NJ- Multi-Alarm Boardwalk Fire 09-12-13

I listened for several hours the work and resource coordination performed by these crews was exemplary. In the case of the Neptune system, sometimes unless your accustomed to utilizing a piece of equipment it is not thought of. Once again my hats off to the work and professionalism of all involved.

I think Mass is correct, although many of us received notification and training on the capabilities of the Neptune Systems after the state coordinated the purchase, they are quartered around the industrial centers of the state and would have a extended response time. Water availability and wind speed were obviously major factors. Glad they finally got the Neptune's there. Being able to sustain high water flows and pressure during major fires has been a long-term problem on the barrier islands in NJ

I'm not 100% sure I'll have to ask our ex chief, he's the state regional coordinator who oversees the Neptune systems and UASI, I think there's a chain of requests, etc, and it probably takes a long while before its even en route. Its the same with the anything UASI related.

  UASI ? ? ?  ???

Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI)

Program through DHS to provide grants to cities and municipalities around major city targets to improve response and preparedness. Includes PD, FD and EMS agencies. Used to be called 'Buffer Zone' grants years ago because they were given to departments around NYC in event of another large scale incident/attack.

http://urbanareas.org/blog/

"The UASI program will provide financial assistance to address the unique multi-discipline planning, organization, equipment, training, and exercise needs of high-threat, high-density Urban Areas, and to assist them in building and sustaining capabilities to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from threats or acts of terrorism.

The UASI program is intended to enhance regional preparedness efforts. UASI program implementation and guidance must include regional partners and should have balanced representation among entities with operational responsibilities for prevention, protection, response, and recovery activities within the region. As the State Administrative Agency (SAA) for the UASI grant, the NYS Office of Homeland Security (OHS) must ensure that each NYS UASI takes an inclusive regional approach to the development and implementation of the UASI program and involve the contiguous jurisdictions, mutual aid partners, port authorities, rail and transit authorities, campus law enforcement, State agencies, Citizen Corps Councils, and MMRS jurisdictions in their program activities.

Activities implemented under UASI must support terrorism preparedness by building or enhancing capabilities that relate to the prevention of, protection from, or response to terrorism in order to be considered eligible. However, many capabilities which support terrorism preparedness simultaneously support preparedness for other hazards. Grantees must demonstrate the dual-use quality for any activities implemented that are not explicitly focused on terrorism preparedness."

Not many trench cuts get made at the boardwalk level. It certainly was innovative. They have gotten hammered down there since Sandy

Media has made some interesting comparisons with the trench to wars, but in reality it was. Just seems like there was no way to stop this fire and it really could have gone further. Great job and a hard fought battle by the volunteers of Ocean County.

As for the businesses lost, I've gotten ice cream from the Kohr's this started at, played in the arcades lost, and eaten at one or two of the restaurants lost.

There was also a massive EMS response to this job.

From Sartin Services, Inc (as in the Thomas/Sartin buses):

"Reports out of NJEMS Task Force indicate that at least three MAB Buses
(MAB 2, MAB 6 and MAB 12) responded to the massive fire that engulfed the
iconic Jersey shore boardwalk. NJ reports that hundreds of firefighter
fought the 10 alarm fire. The MABs were used for Rehab and Command."

Here's a pic of the NJ EMS Task Force ASAP from Lanoka Harbor:
