Shaftway

In the past many buildings were marked with "Shaftway". no doubt in windows where there was no floor just a shaft to the basement.  Obviously a sound idea.  I was wondering what the parameters were for this and if it is some sort of law or legislative regulation?
Also a bit of a soft ball.  I know what AFID is, I just don't have a firm grip on what the actual letters stands for.

AFID was in the AM period  then AFRD (Apparatus Field Reinspection Duty) was in the PM period .....neither term  is in use today... it is now all called BISP which is Bldg Inspection Safety Program.
