UPDATED SOCIAL SECURITY POLICY REGARDING
REQUIRED VISITS TO A SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE

Responding to complaints from Social Security recipients and applicants, legislators and retiree organizations, including RPEA, the Social Security Administration has reversed its policy, announced on March 26, that any individual who has not established an online account, called My Social Security, will no longer be able to file a claim or if receiving Social Security, make changes to their account by phone; they will have to make an appointment by phone and go to a Social Security office in person to verify their identity.

The new policy, effective April 14, 2025, allows individuals applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who cannot use a personal mySocialSecurity account to complete their claim entirely over the telephone without the need to go to a Social Security office. However, Social Security will perform an anti-fraud check on all claims filed over the phone and flag claims that have fraud risk indicators.

Individuals applying for Retirement, Survivors or Auxiliary (spouse or child) benefits will still have to make an appointment by phone and go in person to a Social Security office to present proof of identity.

The SSA's previously announced layoff of 7,000 employees may mean long waits on the phone for service. We urge our members who do not have a mySocialSecurity account to establish one at: www.ssa.gov/myaccount/.
