Squad 2..  I have shirts around that still say squad 2 on them.
The old man worked squad 2 during the 1970's prior to it closing down.
Can we get a scan or photo on here to see one????

RIP SQUAD 5. Many do not know how busy the Lower East Side & Alphabet City once was back in the 60's thru early 70's.  28/11 and 17/18 were in the top 25 a few times.

Yes, I do remember how busy those lower East Side Companies were. It was about one square mile of heavy fire activity. That 28/11, 17/18, and Batt 4 were right up with those busy South Bronx, Browsville, Bed-Sty, and busy Harlem companies. They were "Top Shelf outfits too".

When ENG*41 was closed in 1989 there was strong community opposition however when the FH was to be reopened in 1990 as a Squad there also was opposition from the community that "THEY" did not want the Unit there to be anything other than an ENG just like the original 41 .....the City wanted to get more from the investment & have a Special Unit responding to the lower portion of the BX as well as Harlem but the community did not want "THEIR" Unit leaving the general area & they were very forceful in expressing this so the Job decided to name it an "Enhanced Engine" we tried to have it named SQ*2 which was in succession to SQ*1 already organized the Job said no.....we then tried to have it named SQ*5 which had been in that FH years before they still said no as they were afraid of the community who already was freaking out when they saw the amount of tools & equipment being readied for the re opening 7-1-90 & realized it was more than a local ENG.....back then we were told to use the designation ENG*41 on the Dept Radio but to use SQ*41 on the HT at operations......the activists had so much power that they forced us to get back the Green '81 Mack that had been 41s Rig on closing & had then floated around the City as a Spare....the Job wanted to give us the '87 Mack (with more compartments ) that was at Chauffer training but the community insisted on the Green Rig & the Job caved & we opened with a 9 year old Rig with boxes bolted all over......There were some photos of it on here awhile back by Willy D at the Rock & another of it in the street).

There were a few guys that were not present when the picture was taken & a few that were in the picture that were not on the order the first time around but were detailed for a short period.

Great FDNY History photo of SQ*5 in the Bread Wagon responding from the old QTRS of ENG*17 RIP & LAD*18 (also QTRS of BN*4 in a separate bay / door not visible to the right) at 185 Broome St bet Suffolk & Clinton Sts.....SQ*5 was originally organized in the QTRS w/ ENG*5 on 14 St bet 1st & 2nd Aves.....then moved to Broome St w/ ENG*17....then moved to 269 Henry St off Montgomery w/ ENG*15
......then to 55 East Broadway bet Market & Catherine in the former QTRS of ENG*9 .....then SQ*5 was scheduled to go into the then "new" Fort Pitt w/ 17..18 & 4 but was instead sent to East 150 St bet Morris & Cortland w/ ENG*41 in the BX.... all these moves took place between when organized in 1959 & when disbanded in 1976 ...... two of my good friends who have since Passed To A Higher Level were FFs in SQ*5....Jim Rogers & Jack Fanning ..... www.ebay.com/itm/334046399676?hash=item4dc6b78cbc:g:eek:4AAAOSwdt9gzjRK
