Wanting to know fdny units assigned over 5 alarms on this epic fire in 1942..know of response as follows; 1st alarm 4 engines 2 ladders, 2nd alarm same less one ladder; 3rd alarm 5 engines and 1 ladder; 4th alarm 5 engines 1 ladder; 5th alarm 6 engines 1 ladder plus special units as per various alarms...

I do know that my dad was there with E16. I believe they responded on the 3rd alarm but don't quote me. :-\

At the Wake for Ret DV*14 DC Mario Cherci there were pictures displayed...one of his appreciative Daughters showed me him climbing down a cargo net on the side of The Normandy as one of the last FDNY Members off the ship ...(not sure where he was working that day) at the time of his Funeral he was listed as the oldest FDNY Retiree......Retired DC Mario E. Cherchi Passed To A Higher Level on 1-11-13 at age 98 the oldest living FDNY Member....Reposing at Martin A. Gleason Funeral home 36-46 Bell Blvd Bayside QNS Fri 1-18-13 ...2-5 & 7-10....Mass Sat 1-19-13 at Our Lady Of The Blessed Sacrament Bayside QNS.....internment @ Mt St Marys Cemetery................................REST IN PEACE BROTHER.....PRAYERS FOR THE COMFORT OF THE FAMILIES.

Normandie fire 2/9/42 at pier 88 at the foot of West 48th St. Signal 55-852. initially reported to Manhattan Central Office by a Coast guardsman on duty on the pier at 2:49 pm. 22 signal sent from the street box at 3:01 by battalion aide. 33 signal sent from same box at 3:02 by a different aide. 44 signal sent at 3:12 on orders of AC John McCarthy. First due boat, John J. Harvey arrived at that time. The boat Firefighter arrived at 3:27. The Duane also there. PWH at 5:23. UC on orders of Commissioner Walsh at 6:30 pm. Normandie capsized at 2:37 am, almost twelve hours after the box was transmitted.
