Staten Island Vollies Ask for More Funding

1200 runs for Richmond engine. More than id expect which is good for them. Even 900 for Oceanic is a lot. I’d say for a volunteer company operating along side FDNY in NYC that’s a good amount of runs. Compared to other FDNY engines it’s low, but with L76 and L82 under or around 1000 runs it’s an interesting comparison. Richmond engine’s 1200 is more than E151 and E168 for 2025. I’m sure a large majority for Richmond engine would be EMS, and I’m not sure of their “quality” of runs - just going off the # provided in the article.

The city is about to enter a financial crisis akin to 1975. FDNY EMS is short staffed and underpaid. Volunteer fire departments throughout the United States are experiencing rapid declines in membership. Many volunteer departments are closing or merging. Certainly not a fire service model in NYC. Nothing against these guys. If you want to keep doing it - God Bless you. Broad Channel and Edgewater VFD’s have actually been quite helpful over the years. But for the City to fund these departments sets bad precedent and is in many cases duplicative. As things begin to get financially worse for this City in the coming years, and the spectre of company closures appears once again - don’t want to give Mandami admin any reason to think - “well we are now funding Volunteers in a certain area so we can close a nearby company. Thank you for your service to the residents of Staten Island. But it is what it is.
