Taunton Fire Department Responds to Four-Alarm Fire in Commercial Building

MAY 28, 2022 BY JGPRROBERT

Chief Timothy J. Bradshaw reports that the Taunton Fire Department and mutual aid partners battled a four-alarm fire in a commercial building adjacent to the Mill River.

On Saturday, May 28, at approximately 4 a.m., Taunton firefighters responded to multiple fire alarm activations at 4 Spring Lane, an approximately 29,000-square-foot mill building that was built in 1900.

Companies arrived to find heavy fire and smoke showing on arrival, and immediately began a search of the building, established water supply and began an interior attack on the fire.

Additional alarms were struck as the fire spread, and firefighters were forced to evacuate the building and begin an exterior attack on the fire.

The building’s location adjacent to the Mill River, as well as fire conditions, made fully accessing the building difficult.

There are no reported injuries.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 12:30 p.m., but companies are expected to remain on scene for hours wetting down and overhauling the building. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.

The cause is under investigation by the Taunton Fire Department, with assistance from the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.

The Berkley, Lakeville, Bridgewater, Raynham and Rehoboth Fire Departments provided mutual aid at the scene, and the North Attleboro, Somerset, Easton and Norton Fire Departments covered Taunton stations.

By Boston 25 News StaffMay 28, 2022 at 2:06 pm EDT
TAUNTON, Mass. — An old Taunton mill building caught fire early Saturday morning, working its way up to a 4-alarm fire.

The fire started around 4 a.m. Saturday inside the 29,000-square-foot mill building that was built in 1900 on Spring Lane. Fire officials told Boston 25 News the building used to be a music studio in town but has since been turned into apartments and small businesses.

Firefighters from several departments banded together in an attempt to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

“Additional alarms were struck as the fire spread, and firefighters were forced to evacuate the building and begin an exterior attack on the fire,” according to Taunton Fire Chief. “The building’s location adjacent to the Mill River, as well as fire conditions, made fully accessing the building difficult.”

There were no injuries, according to officials.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 12:30 p.m., but companies are expected to remain on the scene for hours wetting down and overhauling the building. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.

The cause is under investigation
